While Overspill by Ali Taylor is brimful to bursting with larky stylistic invention, it strikes me as a prime example of how the modish requirement to be playful – and ostentatiously experimental – among young writers today can drown serious themes under a riptide of self-conscious theatricality. Rather than taking you out into the world of life-and-death issues, the play regresses to the level of a shared adolescent daydream.

Tim Roseman’s simple, driving production finds a physicality to match the beat of the words, and the piece is beautifully performed by Syrus Lowe as Baron, who is torn by competing loyalties, Paul Stocker as army reject Finch, and Danny Worters, whose Potts just wants everything to stay the same.
